Can I mount a snow plow to my pickup truck or SUV?How well can you expect your pickup truck or RV to handle a snow plow? This is probably not the first question asked by one who wants a snow plow on their vehicle, but it is a question that will arise, sooner or later. Anyone shopping for a decent snowplow will quickly find out that they are thinking about mounting a unit on their vehicle that might weigh well over 500 pounds that also consumes copious amounts of electrical power to operate the hydraulics. Pickup trucks and RV's do not come off the showroom floor equipped to handle 500 pounds hanging off the front suspension, so your choices are to get your front springs replaced or have your suspension otherwise reinforced for the additional load. As for the extra demand for electrical power, it is variously suggested that you upgrade to a larger capacity battery and/or something in the range of a 140 amp alternator. Without these suggested upgrades you are probably inviting premature and costly repairs to your vehicle, but if you go all the way to insure that your new plow is being operated by a vehicle that is up to it, why not make a little money with that plow? Now you are ready to do some of that plowing around town that home and business owners pay good money for – and your truck is up to the task.
