What kind of plow should I buy? A 'V-blade plow' or a 'Straight-blade' plow?

What kind of Snow Plow? A 'V-blade plow' or a Straight?

I read one debate on which is better, a Vee plow or a straight edge plow and it seemed little more than the old Ford vs. Chevy debate. Owners of Vee plows love them. Straight blade plow owners quickly point out that there are more moving parts to a Vee plow, which is a disadvantage, and the area at the apex of the Vee tends to leave snow behind. Even though it would seem easier to control the windrow with a straight blade plow, Vee plow owners insist that they can clear a parking lot faster with a Vee than with a straight blade and that it takes less horsepower to do it. That makes sense. If you are pushing thru snow with a Vee, there is no real side pressure against your suspension such as you would expect from an angled straight blade, so with a Vee you are slicing throught the snow more like an arrow.

Logically, a Vee plow seems to be a better plow, even with the disadvantage of more moving parts and the center Vee hinge mechanism that needs to be kept clean from icing up. Apparently, the only distinct disadvantage to a Vee plow is the weight. Vee plows are usually about twice the weight of most straight blade plows. A consideration of 500 lbs. vs. 1000 lbs. mounted to the front of your vehicle is significant, so if you have a half ton pickup truck you might want to go with a lighter straight blade plow.
